Athens: Days 1 & 2

The start of the tour that certainly did not disappoint. Here are our favorite pictures from beautiful Athens.

Fun Fact 1

Atop the Acropolis

According to Mama Fey, our acropolis guide, when raising or lowering the Greek flag on top of the acropolis, they like to say: "Good morning Athens, good morning Greece, we are Greek".

Fun Fact 2

Athena's Temple for Every Citizen

Most temples in Greece were meant for priest/priestesses or wealthy citizens to walk into, while typical citizens could look at the artwork and story-telling from the outside. However, because the inside of the temple had artwork, this shows that uniquely, commoners could enter the temple as well.

Fun Fact 3

Changing of the Guards

The Evzones - a special unit of the Hellenic Army - who guard the tomb of the unknown soldier, wear unique shoes called the tsarouchia. These tsarouchia each weigh 5.5 lbs. The strength, flexibility, and discipline they must demonstrate to perform such precise movements are what truly makes this changing of the guards extraordinary.
